Working student: Computational Linguistics / Computer Science / Data Science

Analytical, organized, imaginative?

Do you have an understanding of machine language data processing, such as extraction or cleaning up, and enjoy coding? Can you implement requirements independently and help to automate manual processes? Do you like to contribute your own ideas to varied projects? Are you able to quickly familiarize yourself with processes and requirements after a short training period? We are looking for you!

We are looking for you

At berns language consulting, we are seeking support in the area of NLP in the back office for our interdisciplinary team. We are language process consultants and language data experts with different professional backgrounds, e.g., in (computer) linguistics, translation, or computer science. We support internationally active customers in the implementation and optimization of their language processes and the preparation of their language data. We examine customer processes from a business, technical, and professional perspective and know the best software on the market.

Your responsibilities

You will support our computational linguistics team in the back office. This includes researching current topics in the field of language and AI, testing new possibilities, and presenting your findings to the team. You will help evaluate software providers according to specific requirements, accompany pilot projects, and contribute your ideas when it comes to evaluating machine learning models (e.g., machine translation, LLMs) and deriving potential improvements from evaluation results. You will work behind the scenes on customer projects, test code, and independently implement isolated requirements programmatically.

Your profile

It is important that you have basic programming skills and are enthusiastic about languages and NLP. We could imagine that you are studying (business) informatics, data science, digital humanities, or computational linguistics at the end of your bachelor’s degree or at the beginning of your master’s degree.

Skills

  • Very good written and spoken German and English
  • Very good verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent PC skills: Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Very good knowledge of Python

Nice-to-have (of advantage, but can be learned on the job)

  • Knowledge of other programming and scripting languages
  • Experience with PyCharm, Git, and MongoDB
  • Prior knowledge of NLP
  • Basic XML knowledge (schema, validation, parsing)
  • Knowledge of CAT and MT systems as well as (terminology) databases
  • Basic knowledge of linguistics and terminology

What we offer

With us, you will have the opportunity to contribute your own ideas and put them into practice with a high degree of personal responsibility in a small, interdisciplinary team. We have (almost) no hierarchies—every team member is a valuable part of the blc family, which is strengthened by regular team events. After your training period, you can work from home if you wish. Working hours are flexible and can be arranged by mutual agreement; planned absences, e.g., during exam periods, are possible.

Start date, location, contract

  • Start immediately in our office in Düsseldorf, home office, or hybrid
  • Minimum 12 hours per week (possibly more, depending on requirements and consultation)
  • Duration: Minimum one year, longer preferred
  • Hourly wage negotiable

Computer linguist (part/full-time)

Are you analytical, creative, adventurous?

You understand machine, linguistic processes, such as term extraction, corpusanalysis and bilingual sentence alignment, know how language software (MT, CAT, terminology) works and what can be done to improve the results.
You can and automate manual processes.
You like to work with people, love unsolved puzzles and also like to draw a diagram to visualize your ideas.
You think quickly into processes and requirements and find solutions and optimization approaches.

Responsibilities

You support in terminology projects, conduct customer meetings and document results.
You carry out terminology work, deal with terminology software, test and evaluate, observe the market and pass on your knowledge to the team and customers.

Education

It is important that you have the necessary basic knowledge and that you are interested in the tasks.
We could imagine that you also have a university, TH or FH degree (Master) in philological courses, translation, language technology, computational linguistics (or comparable).

Knowledge

  • Native German language skills, both written and spoken
  • Very good English skills, both written and spoken
  • Knowledge of another language is advantageous (preferably bilingual)
  • Very good verbal and written communication skills
  • Prior knowledge of terminology
  • Very good access to software applications, especially in the field of terminology
  • Very good PC skills: Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Understanding of technical contexts is an advantage
